Invitation

On behalf of the organizing committee we would like to welcome you cordially to the 11th Congress of the International Society for Rotary Blood Pumps.

Rotary blood pumps make a growing contribution to the field of mechanical circulatory support in severe heart failure. In recent years substantial progress has been achieved in terms of miniaturization, energy consumption and blood compatibility.

It is a most enjoyable opportunity to organize this interesting symposium at the Heart Center in Bad Oeynhausen aiming at surgeons, cardiologists, perfusionists, nurses, engineers, and – of course – manufacturers.

We are convinced that this meeting will provide good chances to exchange new scientific ideas and trends.

Welcome and Presidential Address

Dear Colleagues,

As President of the International Society for Rotary Blood Pumps (ISRBP) and current Congress Chairman, it is our distinct delight to cordially welcome you to the 11th annual meeting to be held in Bad Oeynhausen, Germany.

The organizing committee and executives of the Heart Center North Rhine-Westphalia are extremely honored to have the opportunity to host this year’s annual meeting discussing the rapidly evolving field of mechanical circulatory support using rotary blood pumps. The use of rotary blood pumps in extracorporeal circulation during heart-lung procedures, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, and short-term support in post-cardiotomy failure is well established. The multitude of beneficial attributes of rotary pumps lead to an increasing use in long-term mechanical support as bridge to transplantation. While donor-organ shortage prevails, the necessity to develop devices for destinational therapy is obvious and target of extensive research. Initial clinical results are very encouraging initiating further extensive effort to reach this ambitious mile stone.

Rotary blood pumps, minimal in size, predispose to assist children in congestive heart failure. At Mott’s Pediatric Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan the first successful bridge by an axial flow pump to pediatric heart transplantation has recently been performed. The National Heart Lung Institute has recognized the facts and initiated a new grant to develop rotary blood pumps suitable for pediatric circulatory assistance.

The multidisciplinary character of our society will serve as an interesting unique forum to exchange new scientific and clinical ideas, results, trends and visions. Furthermore, people from all parts of the world gather to share latest know-how and camaraderie

We are extremely grateful to the most generous support of our exhibitors and sponsors allowing this meeting to take place. Please forward your appreciation while visiting the exhibits.

Welcome to Bad Oeynhausen to enjoy the 11th annual meeting of the International Society for Rotary Blood Pumps
